John 16:1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.

16:2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.

Beginning in John chapter 13 Jesus has been speaking to the twelve disciples during the Passover meal.

All the promises were delivered not to the church today, the body of Christ, but rather to the twelve disciples.

Promised to the twelve :

1) Many mansions John 14:2

2) Greater works John 14:12

3) Anything asked in the name of Jesus will be done John 14:14

4) The Spirit of truth John 14:17

5) To abide in Christ John 15:4

6) If abiding in Christ and his word abides in them they may ask what they will and it will be done John 15:7

Jesus spoke of them being put out of the synagogues which further makes it dubious that the church, the body of Christ was in view here.

Hi Doug

That’s a good question. To answer it properly, we need to read what Jesus said about the time of His coming.

Matthew 24 gives us a lot of detail as to what will occur before Jesus returns.

In John 16 Jesus was referring to the 72 disciples

In Matthew 24 He is referring to those who will be there in the end times.

The warnings are similar in a lot of ways although not identical.

Jesus said the kingdom of heaven was at hand. Christ would have shed his blood for the new testament and if Israel repented and received Christ they would have entered the tribulation spoken of in Matthew 24 and Jesus would have established the earthly Davidic kingdom. Israel rejected Christ so God saved Paul for this dispensation of grace. God will once again turn to Israel.

He never said His return was at hand, did he? Nope He didn’t.
The gospel went out to the Jews first; that is what Jesus commanded the 120 disciples
He told the 11 to go into the whole world not just to Israel
Matthew 24 is depicting another period, when the Son of Man would return in glory.
It seems you’re confusing the first coming with the second coming of Christ.
