THE APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to hell.
The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

In the Apostles Creed it says that Jesus “descended to hell“.
Do you believe that Jesus went to Hell?
Why would Jesus go to Hell?
Are there any scripture verses that support this?

I don't remember the words "he descended to hell", what I remember was "He descended to the dead, on the third day he rose again and ascended to heaven"

ETA: Maybe it also said "on the third day he rose again, in accordance with the Scriptures" - I remember seeing a couple of variations but don't even recall seeing him going to hell mentioned.

If he descended into hell it was only to proclaim victory over it. He said it was finished on the cross.

It is based on this 1 Peter 3:18-20. “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey.”

NO CLUE why this was deemed important enough to get into the Apostle's Creed.... the origin of which is largely unknown. But obviously, those in the Early Church regarded this as significant.

Today there are many THEORIES about why Jesus did this and what (if anything) it accomplished.... but these are nothing more than human speculations since this is the ONLY THING the Bible says about this.
