I think it's amplifying what was already there.
One problem with the internet is that in many ways it's a great equalizer. Which can be a good thing in that it lets the little people have their say, but it's not always a good thing when it becomes difficult to differentiate between the person who knows what they are talking about based on extended study or actual life experience, and 36-year-old Kevin who still lives in mummy's basement and has no life experience beyond helping her fill orders for her latest MLM scheme.
It can be interesting to read a range of opinions but sometimes it's nice to know ahead of time whether an opinion is at least a reasonably informed opinion. Personally I like reading opinion pieces from people I generally disagree with, simply because it helps me understand a different world view. I just don't much enjoy reading opinion pieces when it seems someone has formed an opinion without doing any actual thinking.
