would you maintain a relationship with your in-laws? Why/why not?

When my spouse died, I maintained a relationship with her parents and sister until her parents died. After that, certain things happened and I stopped contact with the sister and her family. Only in the last few years did she contact me and we discussed some things related to my ceasing contact and so she understood. It is complicated but we are friends now.

If her parents had lived a while longer, I would have kept up contact. They were kind, decent folk.

My husband's sisters have both gotten distant from us after the death of their mother. We talk a few times a year. We've invited them to come visit, but in 10 years neither have bothered and we were invited to visit them once when the daughter of one was getting married. I doubt they would want to continue having a relationship if my husband were to pass.
