I have a Sony Vaio from 2011. It had 4 GB RAM, a 500GB HDD, and an i7 2620M. I recently upgraded its RAM to 8 GB and today I upgraded its HDD to a SSD of 500 GB. It's old HDD is now in an Inateck enclosure and I am using it as an external backup drive. The laptop is faster now. It boots in around 15 seconds and finishes loading everything after booting in another 15 seconds. I am well pleased.

Why not put in a 1TB SSD?

With the Sony vaio upgrading memory and the hdd only needed one part of the 'backplate' opened and that only needed two Phillips head screws to be removed. The ram clipped into place without any screws and the hdd had only four screws to undo. It wasn't hard.

1TB conventional drives aren't hugely expensive either. I saw some 2TB laptop drives for under \$100.
