What's the value of a human life?

Our film makers think it is very great indeed. The film The Martian posits spending billions to save one man. The motives for saving him are mixed - publicity, intrinsic value, politics - but they all have one thing in common; that a human being matters. So how can we have script writers and film makers agree that human life matters so much that spending billions is alright - almost expected - when we have wars, abortion, and euthanasia? What's happening to us as human beings that on the one hand we like the noble image of "no price is too great to save a human life" while at the same time thinking of unborn babies and burdensome elders are so worthless that we want to dispose of them like we might dispose of a pet?

God said, 'Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.' So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Gen 1:26-27

"The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic." - Joseph Stalin

That's just how the world thinks.
