Your boss texts you “We’re short staffed and I need you to come in” on your day off, how would you respond?

What does my contract say is what I need to consider. If they agreed that this wouldn't happen, say Sorry, I can't do it. If there was no agreement concerning it, I'd probably go in and expect time and a half pay.

Depends on what I have planned for that day. Sometimes I go in and sometimes I have too much going on such as appointments were I don't go in. You get this a lot in nursing.

A lot would depend on whether they were a good boss or not.

I worked for one boss who would always lead by example. He was demanding but he treated his team very well. I'd go the extra mile for him if I could. He was the kind of guy who would ask us to come in early or stay late (sometimes both) to get stuff done but also made it very easy for us if we needed something. With him it was never a problem if I needed to come in late and leave early on the same day because I needed to get my car serviced, for example.

I worked for another boss who was a total waste of space. As far as he was concerned if my contract didn't say I had to do it then I didn't do it. Working for him I'd literally go and stand outside the office for 60 minutes at lunch time because my contract said I got an hour for lunch so I took every minute of it. I tried the give-and-take approach with him previously but he was the kind of manager who would quite happily expect people to work unpaid overtime but the minute you needed to leave early for something he gave you a hard time for it. I hated him with a passion.

He would never do that. I have had customers who were in a hurry and I worked at night or on my day off, cause the kids were with their dad anyway.
