I used to follow Him by keeping my commitment to make Jesus Lord of my life but failed epically. By a Bill Rudge's Ministry pamphlet, I even made a covenant with my mouth not to cuss out at the warehouse when no one was around, but the very next day I was worse than I ever was before. The devil put thoughts in my head saying "You are not His. If you were His, He would have helped you keep your covenant."

I had stopped listening to the devil but I was at my wits end & so I had prayed, "Why aren't you helping me? You know I do not want to do this."

Then a small still voice ( not audible, but I heard Him ) said "You made the covenant. You'd said you were going to do it. I had made the covenant with you & I said I am going to do it. All I ask from you is to believe in Me."

I was humbled that day. But still, we are to test the spirits & not just believe everything supernatural is of God. Sure enough scriptures proved His words heard.

Numbers 30:2 If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth. KJV

Ecclesiastes 5:4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. 5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. 6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands? 7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God. ~ KJV

So this is why believers are being lied to about God helping them keep their vows, promises, & commitments. His words in the O.T. says He will not help when it is their vow, promises, & commitment as it s the work of their hands. Why would God help if man will claim falsely that they'd kept the vow or commitment?

Jesus reconfirms the warning in the O.T. for why in verse 26 below saved believers now, should not make any vows, promises, or commitments.

Matthew 5:33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. ` KJV

So if a believer wants to do good or make themselves good, Jesus says this.

John 6:28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. ~ KJV

Luke 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. ~ KJV

So we deny ourselves as able to follow Him by the deeds of the law & by the will of the flesh, pick up the cross daily in that it is not we who live but Christ in us, so that when He says "Follow Me" he is asking us to trust Him as our Good Shepherd to help us to follow Him for why the just shall live by faith alone.

Galatians 2: 15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid. 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor. 19 For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God. 20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. ~ KJV

Galatians 3:1O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain. ~ KJV

So I had asked Jesus for forgiveness for making commitments, covenant with my mouth, pledges, & promises that are God's to do & to finish & He has set me free from my yokes of bondages to rest in Him & all His promises to me for His help & power in following Him.

Galatians 5:1Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.... 5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. ~ KJV

Philippians 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:.... 11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God. ~ KJV

Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. ~ KJV

Hebrews 4:1 Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. 3 For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world....
9 There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. 10 For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. 11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. ~ KJV

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. ~ KJV

Fighting a habitual sin? Trust Jesus to help you put away any provision for the flesh daily ( the weights ) & not just the sins. Trust Him to destroy the work of the devil in your life to set you free.

Hebrews 12:1
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. ~ KJV

1 John 3:3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.... 8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. KJV

2 Timothy 4:18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. KJV

Jude 1:24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, 25 To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. ~ KJV

May the Lord Jesus Christ enable you to receive His words to call on Him for help in being set free from all yokes of bondages that is for Him to do & rest in Him as our Good shepherd daily to help us lay aside every weight & sin in following Him. Whenever we do sin, ask for forgiveness & help to be rid of the provisions for the flesh, cast down wicked thoughts to think on good things, trusting Him as our Good Shepherd to help us to follow Him in all things.

1 John 2:1My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. ~ KJV

1 John 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full. 5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ~ KJV

2 Corinthians 10:4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) 5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. ~ KJV

Philippians 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.....13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. ~ KJV

Psalm 19:12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. 13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer. ~ KJV

How do you wish to define "follow"? That's the key to answering this question.

How do you wish to define "follow"? That's the key to answering this question.
If we look a how we come to Jesus by simply believing in Him, then that is how we are to follow Him just as a child would in taking Him at His word.

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. ~ KJV

Mark 10:13 And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. 14 But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. 15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. KJV

That would explain why it is written that the just shall live by faith. If Christians finding following Him is hard by keeping their commitments & promises, then they should try surrendering from it, ask Jesus for forgiveness & be set free from those bondages to rest in Him as Their Good Shepherd as they did when they believed in Him to be saved as Their Savior.

Trust is the basis for all relationships & those who put their trust in Him in being their Good Shepherd in helping them by pointing out the weights & sins by His words so He can help them to lay them down is how we walk in the light with the Father & the Son will not be put to shame. Hoping in His mercy in following Him is key for the habitual sinning but saved believer for He will destroy the works of the devil in their lives, laying down every provision for the flesh & sin in their thoughts daily to think on good things so sin has no dominion over them.

Hebrews 12:1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. ~ KJV

Look to Jesus Christ & His promises to you for help in following Him rather than looking to yourself by keeping your commitment & your promises by the religious flesh or your will power in following Him by the deeds of the law.

The only question he actually asked was this:
Your quote was in reply to my quote below.

"So this is why believers are being lied to about God helping them keep their vows, promises, & commitments. His words in the O.T. says He will not help when it is their vow, promises, & commitment as it s the work of their hands. Why would God help if man will claim falsely that they'd kept the vow or commitment?"

The Promise Keepers' program is an example of lying to believers that God will help them keep their promises if they keep trying when scriptures warns against making promises that is not in their power to keep nor finish but is on God to do by faith alone.

That also include the Graham's altar call of making a commitment to follow Christ for the assurance of salvation ( which is the opposite of the gospel he had preached, as if keeping that commitment to follow Christ is how any one can have assurance of salvation. Not.

Best way to get to know Him & the power of His resurrection when we rest in Him to finish His work in us as we follow Him in His words by faith alone. That way believers may see them following Him way more than they would have by doing the best they can by keeping that commitment.

Lutherans don't look to any commitment to know that they have salvation unto God for all eternity. We will be with God forever because "by grace through faith" we believe that Jesus died for our sins and we are forgiven and because of His resurrection that we too will be resurrected to live for eternity with Him.

So if a fellow Lutheran comes to you & say he or she find it hard to follow Jesus, do you say unto them to believe Jesus is committed to helping them follow Him in abiding in His words to walk in the light in fellowship with the Father & the on for that is what a Good Shepherd does? Or how would you word it?

If a fellow Lutheran is straying I point to the cross where Jesus died for the forgiveness of our sins. The Gospel is what feeds us. Telling someone to DO something to get back into faith is not the Gospel but Law. The proper distinction between Law and Gospel is critical.

I follow the Lord Jesus Christ by God's grace through faith alone. Only by God's grace can I even believe, much less practice my faith.

I figured you would know it ... I am trying to remember that great quote from Luther about going out and sinning a little when the devil whispers to you to make you doubt. Do you remember it?

All I know is that when I got saved a vow was written on my heart. I used to be a kleptomaniac, a compulsive thief, at any store I walked into I thought it no problem to shoplift and I actually got better at it, stealing bigger and pricier items..
And then unexpectedly, like a thief in the night, God opened my eyes and gave me a thorn in my flesh, a heavy conviction of the heart and an earnest repentance simultaneously.. Since that day I have had no impulse to steal whatsoever, you could not pay me to steal a piece of gum.. I feel forgiven and and because so I have no lingering guilt left over from the "old Adam", now when I read "let the thief steal no more" my spirit wags its tail (so to speak) as I feel comfort knowing those words were prescribed directly for me some two thousand years ago.. However this was no vow of my own per se, I always describe that conviction unto full repentance as "a free one" (from God ;) ) as for my other flaws, when I slip up I feel the conviction and repent, pray and try to stay vigilant of them but just know that despite your imperfections, by staying humble as you mature in your walk with God, He will never leave your side or forsake you nor will he take back his forgiveness lest the Son of God should be crucified again ..which is IMPOSSIBLE for it IS finished!
So yes stay away from promises you cannot keep, if we say we are without sin/free from sin we lie, which is a sin in itself. Focus on the Word and the Word will be written in your heart and along in Spirit and His Holy name written in your forehead. God bless
