There are times when I agree with it but times when I don't and the main example I like to give is that if you go before a Judge in a courtroom, you MUST respect him no matter how he treats you. If you don't, you'll be in contempt of court.

"Patriotism is supporting your country all the time and your government when it deserves it."
--- Mark Twain

The office of President of the USA is given the utmost respect by not only citizens but by a great many people all over the world. On the other hand the present occupant of that office is unworthy of respect and in many ways is beneath contempt.

I agree....

Sometimes it is right to respect the OFFICE, the position/vocation - even if we don't know if this individual deserves such. If a policeman stops me while driving, I need to respect his office. It matters NOT if it's been proven to me that THIS PERSON is one of wisdom, skill, integrity and character; I may know nothing at all about this man or woman except what I need to know - his/her office.

I was raised to respect elders and people in authority.... to say "sir"... to respect my priest and teachers... not ONLY because they are likely good people but because of the office they held. To this day, as I interact in business with a wide range of people, I show respect to my elders, to mayors and city council members, etc. whether I KNOW that they personally are saints or if they could be sinners.

I don't necessarily believe that you have to give respect to get it. I think "respect is earned" is a phrase that people in positions of authority would do well to keep in mind. Being a cop for instance, doesn't mean you get to point to your badge and boss everyone around because you have the authority. It means you'll protect and serve the community and they in turn will be inclined to give you respect. As for people, you basically have my respect until you lose it.

I think it goes both ways. Sometimes I meet someone I get along with really well and that's until they either piss me off or throw me under the bus. Then they never get my trust back and they're out of luck. I'm only forgiving towards certain people. Why? because those people have to convince me why they want to be in my life. If they can't sell me, then they need to do their own thing and move on.

It's a trite little saying that doesn't mean a whole lot without context. Also, I think you mean "esteem". I may not esteem the alcoholic bum begging for change, but it's basic human decency to respect his space, his person, his basic human rights etc.

Also I may respect an individual's talent at something, dedication to something, hard work etc but I may still think he or she is a person of low character depending on other things.

I don't think all respect is earned because if we go before a judge, we can't talk back to him and have to respect his role as authoritarian. Otherwise we'd be in contempt of court and that wouldn't be fun.
