There are times when I agree with it but times when I don't and the main example I like to give is that if you go before a Judge in a courtroom, you MUST respect him no matter how he treats you. If you don't, you'll be in contempt of court.

Sometimes it is right to respect the
OFFICE, the position/vocation - even if we don't know if this individual deserves such. If a policeman stops me while driving, I need to respect his office. It matters NOT if it's been proven to me that THIS PERSON is one of wisdom, skill, integrity and character; I may know nothing at all about this man or woman except what I need to know - his/her office.
I was raised to respect elders and people in authority.... to say "sir"... to respect my priest and teachers... not ONLY because they are likely good people but because of the office they held. To this day, as I interact in business with a wide range of people, I show respect to my elders, to mayors and city council members, etc. whether I KNOW that they personally are saints or if they could be sinners.
