Not getting a ranch style house so that it could be my forever home. I always wanted a second floor and now that I have that, I don't want it. The stairs will be hard on my knees as I age, so we'll eventually have to move out of here. There is no room for one of those stair lifts.

To be honest I don't have any. We bought at the right time, just before the market went crazy around 2017 so we got a very good deal. The only thing I would like is a swimming pool, but I can also see how in the further future I would rather not have one, so I think it is the right long term choice. No stairs and they don't generally build a basement here in Florida, so no worries there. We intend on staying in this home forever.

Can't you get stair lifts where the chair folds out of the way?

Our house has steps everywhere. You can't get into the house without going up at least three steps. I ponder our future, whether we'll be able to cope with steps forever. But we have two stairways going upstairs, so if needs be we can put a lift on one of them and leave the other one free. It just means access to the attic and basement won't be an option for whoever can't do stairs.

No regrets. Renting sucks.

The biggest thing facing me is whether or not to move. I've been in my place many years now, and have enjoyed the area, nice neighbors, etc. However, it makes sense for me to downsize if my future doesn't include another partner and children.

I'm not sure if we have the space. The front door is right there by the stairway when you walk in. And there is a room to the right of it as well.

That sounds tricky - I thought you were saying the stairwell wasn't wide enough to use if you had a chair lift in it. If you need a lot of space at the bottom of the stairs that rules out some options. That said hanging the front door to open outwards is probably cheaper than moving :)
