Childless vulture couple in Arnhem zoo adopts two-week-old youngster

Two black vultures (black vultures? We call em monk vultures) at Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem have adopted a 15-day-old youngster. The young bird was born in a French zoo, but was hatched there in an incubator, without parents.

It is the vulture couple's first child. Father, mother and the little one are doing well.

The French vulture cub was sent to a Belgian zoo so that it could grow up there, but the birds there did not accept the cub. The Arnhem vultures had just completed an unsuccessful breeding attempt and received the little one enthusiastically, according to the zoo.

The black vulture is the largest bird of prey in Europe, but a vulnerable species. Zoos have set up a breeding program with the aim of releasing young vultures into their native habitat.

That is why a so-called incubator has been used for an egg of black vultures in the southern French animal park. Subsequently, the young bird could grow up with a parent couple that is not related to it. This will introduce more different genes into the vulture population, which should make the animal species healthier.

According to Burgers' Zoo, several black vultures raised in zoos have already formed pairs with wild vultures. As a result, the population in the south of France is now doing better.
