Every year my husband wants to make it until November until we turn on the furnace, but I think we only made it that far one time. I turned the heat on last night, but only to 60...and he got up and had to turn it up even higher because it was so cold. I'm glad I wasn't the only cold one :D

Our furnace needs some work and our heating guy is rammed this year. Thankfully we have a heat pump, which is what we usually use if we need to take the chill off in the shoulder seasons.

Some heat pumps are used all through winter. I'm not sure I'd trust that in the very coldest of weather.

In theory ours would cope, but some areas of the house don't have air ducts so we need to use the oil furnace to heat them. I find the heat pump results in dry air which I really struggle with, so we use it to take the chill off but use oil heat when it gets really cold. We still have part of the house that has the radiators disconnected, so I use the heat pump year round to take the worst of the chill off there. It drives the electricity bill up but the increase is less than the amount of oil it saves us.

We had the fireplace going and the central heating one day this week. That's typical of this area of the world sometimes.
