Both. You need to have a similar upbringing or you have to both be very easy going.

It depends on the basis you're checking compatibility.

If you're talking about a business partner then honesty and integrity are more important. If you're talking about a potential future spouse the reality is you have no idea what you're doing when you stand at the altar because you and they can (and probably will) change beyond recognition between then and the time you die.
