"Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

Ephesians 4:30

What do you think it means to grieve the Spirit of God? How would you know that this is something your doing?

I think that while this verse is specific to believers since it is for those who were sealed for the day of redemption this is addressing many believers. We can act in such a way that even though we are believers we aren't truly living for him and our witness doesn't glorify and honor him with our words, actions or attitudes.

In that case, I believe we fall under the disciplining hand of God because God loves him children and has a desire for us to live for him. He disciplines those he loves. I know I have felt that way at times. Or when he is trying to clearly speak to me and I am not listening and want to do things my own way.

Grieving the Holy Spirit would be causing Him to be angry, vex, disgust, displease, embittered.

Anything that is against the will of God would be considered grieving the Holy Spirit.
