Geomagnetic storm and aurora possible later this week after big solar flare

Another round of beautiful aurora may grace our high-latitude skies later this week thanks to a moderately strong solar flare that lashed out from the sun on Monday morning.

Now heading toward a solar minimum, the sun has been in a relatively quiet period until today when sunspot 2449 erupted in a moderately strong M-class solar flare. Flares of this size have the potential to cause radio-blackouts here on Earth within less than an hour.

GEOMAGNETIC STORMS UNDERWAY: A stream of fast-moving (700 km/s) solar wind is buffeting Earth's magnetic field today, Nov. 10th, and this is causing G2-class geomagnetic storms. Arctic sky watchers should be alert for auroras after nightfall.

GLANCING-BLOW CME EXPECTED ON NOV 11th: Yesterday, Nov. 9th, the magnetic canopy of sunspot AR2449 erupted, producing an M3-class solar flare and a bright CME. Radio emissions from shock waves in the CME suggest that it blew away from the sun faster than 950 km/s (2 million mph). The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory recorded the expanding cloud:
