A decentralized nationwide movement that has seen more than 100 local governments — including four towns in New Jersey and Washington, D.C. — enact at least partial bans on gas-powered leaf blower use in recent years. (Some bans are seasonal, allowing use at peak-leaf times of year.) In October 2021, California passed a law requiring that all small off-road engines used in the state be zero-emissions by 2024. In practice, that means only electric lawn tools will be allowed.
