Maybe it's just on my end... I don't know. CH is shown with "connection not secure" in all the browsers I've tried (Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera, Whale Browser etc.).

It looks like CH supports SSL, but doesn't redirect. Normally if you go to http://site, you'll get a redirect to https://site. CH isn't doing that. So you need to use https: explicitly when you go to it.

I use an Android tablet with a Bluetooth keyboard. I don't like to run the gauntlet of autocorrect and fat fingers, for the reasons you mention

If you enter http:// you don't redirect to https://

That not only leaves the user with an unsecured site but also creates a few other curious glitches. If you're logged into one but not the other you find yourself having to log in again, ironically exposing your login details in the process. I'd have thought this would be a simple enough process to fix with the host?

Just tried linking to the http:// version of this page and it gave me the default color scheme (i.e. not my color scheme) and told me the site was insecure.

I am still having this issue. https shows as secure of course, so there's no issues with your SSL license. You just need to set http to automatically redirect to https when visited. Depending on your hosting environment, I assume you just need to update your .htaccess file to reflect the automatic redirect.
