California already held the distinction of having the highest state income tax in the country, with its top income tax rate at 13.3% for a decade. It was raised even higher to start 2024, with the top rate now reaching an astronomical 14.4%.

High earners contributing to California's economy might be disappointed to hear of a new taxpayer funded program in San Francisco that's sparked outrage among some locals.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the city spends $5 million a year on the "Managed Alcohol Program," a program providing free alcohol to the city's homeless alcoholics.

"Alcohol Use Disorder?" They're alcoholics and they choose to drink alcohol! It's not a disorder. It's a choice. Get them in a 12-step program so they can choose not to drink alcohol. All 12-Step programs are based on the simple, but revolutionary idea that alcoholics can choose not to drink, one day at time in an interactive support system. And since 12-Step programs are the best solution to alcoholism, the City should be funding them and not enabling alcohol consumption. The same goes for all substance abuse choices.

What's your opinion on this program?

California is insane with their money eating policies. Why do people keep voting for those politicians? They claim they're helping people, but they're actually doing more harm than good.

Free beer? Where do I sign up?

Like most things coming out of California these days it's just bonkers. Sooner or later people will stop voting for it. Probably when California runs out of "rich people" to tax to fund it all.

Handing out free alcohol doesn't help the problem, but assuming that a 12 step program is the be-all-end-all of solutions is something I'd expect a person to say who has no history of substance abuse, and likely enjoys a stable and happy social/family life. Am I wrong?

I have this disorder. Yes, it's a disorder. It became a problem when I lost nearly my entire Aussie family in the space of 3 years. That doesn't mean there is no choice, there is. However, without alternatives it is difficult to quit alcohol. I know this well from experience. I can substantially reduce (even eliminate) use easily when I have access to Cannabis. I know it works for me.

I also have experience in AA. I'm guessing more than anyone here because I was forced to go to AA meetings as a young man with a drug problem at the time. The program is good but it doesn't help everyone.
