I heard a sermon today online regarding Eccl 8:16-9:10. The two verses in chapter 8 are:
16 "When I applied my mind to know wisdom and to observe the labor that is done on earth—people getting no sleep day or night— 17 then I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning. Even if the wise claim they know, they cannot really comprehend it."
He talked about how one of the things we have to do is acknowledge and confess our own limited understanding of this universe we live in. There are a lot of unexplainables. So, we have to trust God with what we can't explain. This calls for us to respond to God and even those with questions with some humility. Deut 29:29
Particularly if we just look at what those who are believers and unbelievers receive in this life we may come to the conclusion that it is not beneficial to believe. The Psalmist had these feelings when he looked at how the wicked prospered and the redeemed often toiled. Then in Psalm 73:16-17 it says,
" When I tried to understand all this, it was oppressive to me till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny."
Meaning that those who are wealthy and prosperous and at home in the world and love the world are getting all of their reward now and will receive none in the next life.
