Dutch TV biologist Freek Vonk "gave birth" to a larva in his leg
The Dutch TV biologist Freek Vonk "gave birth" on Tuesday night to the larva that has lived in his leg for almost three months. Vonk discovered in May that three larvae had settled in his body after a visit to Costa Rica. The other two parasites died earlier this month. “As a man, it was an insane, but super fascinating sight to see new life being born from your own body,” writes 40-year-old Vonk on Instagram.
Freek Vonk gave birth to a larva in his leg
Vonk travels all over the world to record his program Freeks wilde wereld in search of unique animal species. After returning from a trip to Costa Rica in May, he discovered that he had brought a "souvenir" with him. It turned out that three larvae, originating from the botfly, live in his leg. Vonk decided to leave the bugs alone and patiently waited for them to come out of his body naturally. He even gave the parasites names: Kwik, Kwek and Kwak and regularly shared updates on Instagram.
While the larvae Kwek and Kwik died earlier this month, the third, Kwak, decided not to show itself until Tuesday night. "Holy moly, I gave birth", Vonk exulted on the social medium. He continues: “As a man, it was an insane but super fascinating sight to see new life being born from your own body... For me this was literally the 'miracle of birth'... It doesn't matter no matter how I look at it, Kwak the Larf is my own flesh and blood! Point!"
Freek was so fascinated that he and his cameraman decided to make a mini-documentary. He writes on Instagram that they are “the FIRST in the world (!!) to film this fascinating animal in great detail!” Freek and his cameraman Ivo have been awake for a total of 55 hours to follow Kwak's 'birth'.
Kwak is named after Donald Duck's nephew in Dutch.
