What are some tips for driving in the snow?

Go slow but not too slow because if the snow is too high you could get stuck. Leave early for your destination and don't drive in someone's tail, leave a lot of space in case they spin out.

If you can, use 4WD all the time on ice and snow. But remember it is much harder to stop that to take off.

What are some tips for driving in the snow?

Keep your speed down, so you're less likely to slide and more likely to regain control if you do slide.

Turn the stereo off and listen to the road. If you can't hear your tires on the road you may have lost traction so be ready for the consequences.

Watch the road ahead more than normal, especially if your car has an automatic gearbox. If you downshift on the approach to a hill the extra power to the wheels could cause them to lose traction.

Don't expect to be able to brake or steer as hard as you can on a clear dry road. Do things gently, think and plan further ahead than normal. Be aware of what happens if you lose traction approaching bends, and also consider what happens if the guy coming the other way loses traction. Is a slide going to result in someone going into the ditch, into a tree, or across the road into oncoming traffic?

If you do slide, steer into the slide. Instinct usually screams at us to turn the wheels the way we want to go but most of the time that just reduces the chances you'll regain traction. If you steer the way the wheels are actually going you can regain traction and then regain control. You did keep your speed down to give yourself time to do that, right?

Before you even get in the car make sure you're prepared to either get home without the car or stay warm for long enough to be rescued if anything does go wrong. If you're driving through an area with no cellphone reception you'll want to make sure you've got some warm blankets at a minimum. Lights and hi-vis clothing are also useful, in case you have to walk to get cellphone service to call for help.

Don’t. Unless you absolutely have to. Then drive very slowly.

If you drive like a knucklehead, thinking that your 4wd and ABS will work magic and defy the laws of physics you get to wait by the ditch while someone in a tow truck comes to pull you out again. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes...
