How would you feel if in order for anyone to keep their drivers license they had to take mandatory written and road test with high passing scores every five years?
It seems like it would create a huge administrative burden with little benefit.
It doesn't seem unreasonable that if you've been involved in an at-fault accident or started a collection of moving violations, you should have to demonstrate you are still a safe driver. But that's only useful if the driving test actually tests real-world driving. If all you're doing is bimbling around some cones at walking pace and maybe taking a 5-minute ride through the local housing estate it's a waste of time. Unless the driving test actually tests a range of driving abilities - merging into traffic, driving at expressway speeds, interacting with other vehicles etc, it's hard to see how anybody except the government benefits from expecting people to jump through more hoops.
