Have you considered downsizing your housing to reduce expenses?

Or perhaps your current home is too large for you to upkeep?

When my husband retires, we're thinking of getting a smaller house and have it be a ranch style instead of a 2 story. I want one floor living, but I also want a basement for when there are tornadoes so we can take shelter.

We downsized when we purchased this home. We downsized as we didn't need the space and we went from 2 floors with a full basement to a single story home.

Downsizing is great if you can find somewhere suitable. My wife and I considered downsizing but found that for some reason moving to a smaller house would mean putting in extra cash as well as seeing taxes go up. I'm not sure how that works, but it means any money we'd save by not having such a big house to heat would get soaked up in the move and in taxes. And of course we'd also lose some space in the process.
