If you cough or sneeze into your hand, where do you expect the germs/mucous to go to that comes spraying out of your mouth? You can't see it all the time but it's there. Then you touch a doorknob or your wife's keyboard and you make her sick.

Caught my husband's cold or whatever it is he has. No fun.

It beats coughing or sneezing into the air.

The crook of the arm is the best area, yes! Except it's hard to teach someone to do that if he's had it in his head since childhood to cough into the hand. I even rewarded with candy for a while when he got it right :D

My dad has used handkerchiefs since I was a kid. Absolutely gross... For whatever reason my mom still washes them. If it were me I'd be handing them to him. Nope, Nope, Nope :D

After touching every thing in the house??? eek

Sanitizing wipes are handy (see what I did there...? :) ) too. Maybe use a cotton swab to get in between the keys?

I can't go around constantly sanitizing everything that I think my husband touched. Yesterday I did walk around and sprayed some things but then completely forgot about the light switches. We don't realize how many things we touch in the course of a day. Refrigerator door handles, remote controls, drawer pulls, etc... I think it's the responsibility of the person who is sick to make sure he isn't spreading his germs as a matter of respect for others.

I carry around hand sanitizer for when I'm out like in church or the grocery store. I don't think it's right for me to use it constantly in my own home when it could be prevented by the sick person to contain himself.

Since I assume you live in the same house as him you're going to get germs simply from the fact he's breathing the same air you are. Personally I'd say you'll probably get whatever cold-like illness the other has regardless of whether you disinfected the light switches.

In the 34 years we've been together, I haven't caught everything he's had because I try to be very careful about things.

You won't catch everything but simply breathing the same air and living in the same space means one of you will most likely catch whatever the other has at least some of the time, however careful you are.

Is that an excuse then? It comes across as one. I mean, people who work in offices spend 8 plus hours a day with other people and they can't say to someone else, "Well, you'll catch it anyway". There's a matter of consideration and respect for others around you.

Not at all, it's just that when something can be spread by airborne particles it seems unlikely that you'll avoid transfer when you breathe the same air as someone who has it.

Offices are a bit of a weird situation - if you make sick pay too generous people will abuse it and if you don't make it generous people will come to work sick because they can't afford to lose a day's pay.
