UK taxes are nice and easy with TaxCalc. In the US the only online options I've come across (not that I've looked very hard) either cost nothing but are interminably tedious to use, or run $100 or more by the time you're done with federal and state taxes.

We file online and get the refund quicker that way.

What I thought was... "do I prepare them myself using online service or installed tax program and e-file OR take them in for a tax service or accountant to do it?" I guess, I can do them old school with the paper forms and a No. 2 pencil.

I have to pay back all my income to a default I owe for a school. I use TurboTax but I have to pay out of pocket for the program each year.

I usually just have my taxes done for me by a professional. I feel that doing it that way ensures that I get the most money back that I can. It costs money to have it done that way, but with two dependents and a modest income, it usually is worth it in the end.

We have an accountant prepare our taxes and he files them electronically.
