What do you do with your old phone when you get a new one?

Five things to do with old cell phones
  • Repurpose it: Hack it, modify it, use it in a project.
  • Activate it: Pass it on or use it as an emergency phone.
  • Give it away: Plenty of charitable organizations would love to have it.
  • Sell it: Make a few bucks if it still has some life.
  • Recycle it: Find a reputable recycler.

Usually by the time I retire a phone it's no use to anyone because it's so old and unreliable. I usually make sure everything on it is securely deleted, which usually means either a high precision dismantling, or a much more low precision dismantling. High precision involves fine tools to remove screws and take things apart piece by piece, low precision involves something more like a club hammer. Either way, it's never going to work again.

One phone was causing me so much aggravation I literally threw it against the wall, hoping it would break it completely and give me the excuse I was seeking to replace it. Sadly it survived, although was no less intermittent in usefulness. I'd had it nearly five years at that point, and was very pleased when the new phone I was waiting for was finally released because it meant I could retire the now-despised phone.

There is a machine at the Walmart where you can get cash for old phones, but I have never used one. I believe we still have all of our old phones, but they are not activated

My current old phone Redmi Note 6 Pro has been acting pretty worst. And it seems like the device will surely collapse. I can tell you that there seems to be not much of use of the old device anymore. So either dissecting the device and throwing it in the garbage or some sort of recycle facility seems to be the only option that I can think of.

I usually recycle my old phone - there are a lot of companies out there now who will offer you a low fixed cash amount for your old phone but they will take it and responsibly recycle the phone.

It depends on the condition of the phone. Usually, I'll try to list the item on a marketplace like Gumtree or eBay to see if anybody is interested in buying it second-hand. If I have no success, I'll use cash converters that will buy second-hand electronics.

With a few of my really old phones, I've traded them in when getting a new phone to get a small discount. With other newer phones, I've just given them to family members.

Neither to all the above. The trash is the perfect place for my old phones. Well, that's because my phone is a cheap 40 dollar phone that I got at Wal-Mart lol

In the past I have sold them. This last time, we sent them in for rebates and got some good deals.

Old phones just keep them for backup and or trust them the right way if you do not have any use or it had it's day :) If the phone is not that old and still have life left then sell or give it away :)

I usually end up trading it in when I purchase a new phone (after they transfer my pictures, contacts etc..) from my old phone to my new phone. My iPhone 10 is still working just fine. I'll keep using it until it bites the dust.
