After many years of trying to harmonize one single verse with the rest of the scriptures, it happened. I had prayed about this off and on for a long time. And the Lord revealed it to me. The verse? “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.” 1 Peter 1:23 (KJV 1900)
Something that didn't fit was saying the Word of God produced the New Birth. Every other mention of the New Birth has it as a fruit of the Holy Spirit you must already have before you can hear the word and believe it. So this verse is of huge importance to those who trust in "the means" of salvation that scripture does not mention.
“According to” is a better translation of dia (by). Because a person must be born-again before they can hear the Word. And Peter speaks of those who are born again before ever hearing the word. Acts 10:34
