What are some things other cultures or countries do to celebrate Christmas? Does your family have a tradition that others might not do?

For Christmas we have a big dinner and then open presents. No one in my family goes to church on Christmas. My dad used to shake his presents and try to guess what was in the package. I miss my parents now. Wish they could have lived longer or forever...

Back when my children were small, they were not allowed out of bed until I got home from work if I worked on Christmas Eve night. Then everyone would gather around the Christmas tree and my husband would pass out gifts. No one could open their gifts until all of the presents were passed out. Then pandemonium would break out. . It makes me chuckle now at the memory.:D

My husband's family always went to the midnight mass and sometimes I'd go with him but once I joined the choir at my former church, I went to my church's evening service. Pizza on Christmas Eve EVERY year! That was a tradition!

As a child I remember the food, the candy, the expectation of Christmas morning, the excitement when it finally got there.

My wife and I are both mostly of German heritage, and our Christmas traditions likely would be familiar to most here. One of the things we are looking forward to is forming OUR traditions - perhaps a blending, perhaps a forming of new ones.

I have a long time friend who now lives in Spain (he was actually born there but came to the US with his family when he was a baby, but returned for college - and just stayed). I visited with him in Spain one Christmas and LOVED a Spanish tradition - which I've embraced. The Spanish are very, very into manger scenes (huge public ones, as well as private ones in homes) but unlike here, they are timed. Now... the scene is just the manger and animals, and way off (perhaps in another room!) are the Three Kings (as they call them). On Christmas Eve day, Joseph and Mary are added. Then after midnight Mass, Jesus is added. Each day, the Three Kings are moved closer..... until Epiphany (which they call Three Kings Day), they finally arrive. I like that.

A blessed Advent to all....
