In my church we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. I've wondered why sinful and unclean are not the same thing?

In my humble opinion, they are two different aspects of the same phenomenon, it est evil. Uncleanness is a direct result of sinfulness. Sin the transgression of God's good wil and uncleanness is a state of being that is repulsive in God's sight.
But praise be to the God Yahwe, the Existing One, through the Lord Jesus Christ, who loves us despite our fallenness.

Do you all confess that by nature men are dead in sin and alienated from the life of God ?

Eph 2:1,5

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved)

Eph 4:18

Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

Interesting.... never thought about that. I guess I've just assumed they are one and the same thing. But the reality that we say sinful AND unclean may indicate some difference. If so, I don't know what that is.

Blessings!

Great question LL

(not Lutheran) but love you guys!

Snip.... "So sin is much more than thinking, saying, and doing things that are wrong. It is a terminal disease. We are by nature sinful and unclean. One should say it is sinful to even exist as we are born. From conception, we are in dire need of forgiveness and rescue from sin, in need of being “born anew.”"
