Why is "the talk" described as being about the birds and the bees? Birds and bees don't exactly mate, so that makes no sense to me.

Bees help the birds??? Huh? No in Dutch it is the flowers and the bees, cause the bees help the flowers. We had a great comedian, who got mad at the disgusting spring with these obscene flowers.

Because it's a metaphor for continuing pro-creation. Birds pick up seeds and either drop them directly or after they are digested so that some are planted elsewhere (seed-male, earth-female). Bees provide the flowers the means to produce seed.
