Friday night my wife went out of town so I thought I'd catch a Mass at the Cathedral. Well low and behold as I'm sitting there, waiting for the service to start, Fr Joubran comes walking out fully vested. I wasn't fully sure it was him until he spoke because he has a distinctive accent.
A little back ground info for perspective might be helpful right about now. Fr Joubran is our local Maronite priest. I've been to many of their services because I really like their particular liturgy. Wednesdays are particularly slow for me a work and if I have a late start I'll attend their morning Mass which happens to be in the little chapel in his parsonage.
Anyway back to the Cathedral I was sitting in the front side section real close to the exit so when the service was overi can get out quickly, of course after the priest leaves the sanctuary. I head right out side up a couple of flights of stairs to the upper parking lot. I had just gotten in my truck and buckled up when I hear a tapping at my passenger side window and to my surprise it was Fr Joubran gesturing for me to roll down my window. (He is such a nice guy and usually has a big smile) and he says "do you live around hear?" Meaning close to the Cathedral and I rather sheepishly answer "yea" which isn't really true but I was just caught off guard. And then he says " what do you do for a living" which I answer "maintenance" which he then says "good I'll have to give you a call sometime" and of course I say "sure!". Then he says "alright then, have a good night".
I guess I shouldn't of been surprised he recognized me but I figured priests meet a lot of people but I guess what really surprised me was how fast he caught up to me in the upper parking lot being I got out quickly and tend to walk fast myself and he is well into his sixties. But its also good to know he is authorized to celebrate a Latin Mass. I remember Fr Pacwa on EWTN is also bi-ritual.
One of my favorite parts of the Maronite Mass is the consecration of the elements in Aramaic, Jesus' native language. For any of you who have never heard it before I posted a sample.
