It is one of the wealthiest countries on Earth - enriched by the bounty of a once-in-a lifetime mining boom - but Australia remains bedevilled by a rising number of its children living in poverty.

Trapped by disadvantage are more than 730,000 youngsters, according to the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS).

It laments a "national shame", and its research suggests about 13% of the population - or three million people - are living below the breadline.

Indigenous children suffer more than their non-Aboriginal counterparts. Single-parent families also endure great hardship.

About 15 million children in the United States – 21% of all children – live in families with incomes below the federal poverty threshold, a measurement that has been shown to underestimate the needs of families. Research shows that, on average, families need an income of about twice that level to cover basic expenses. Using this standard, 43% of children live in low-income families.

What was not mentioned in Post #1 was that the 730,000 youngsters mentioned (731,300 as actually reported – pertaining to 2014), represent only 17.4% of all children. The report also contained a figure for the general population – nearly three million people (around 13.3%) were financially disadvantaged.

The year being reported on the NCCP page is not stated, but It seemed OK for a rough comparison. A balanced view is always beneficial when available.
