Alec Baldwin will be charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter for the death of Halyna Hutchins. New Mexico prosecutors have been weighing whether to bring criminal charges for months. Halyna, a rising cinematographer, was killed on the set of Rust when a gun Baldwin was holding discharged during rehearsals. He's repeatedly maintained he did not pull the trigger. The 30 Rock star is just one of three people authorities believe played a role in Halyna's death.

How does a gun go off without someone pulling the trigger?

It's hard to see how a gun would fire without the trigger being pulled. Given how many guns there are in the US I'd imagine we'd know about it, if it were a problem.

I saw a headline recently that suggested it wasn't entirely clear-cut the extent of Baldwin's culpability, although frankly wasn't sufficiently interested in the case to read the article.

On the face of it, it seems the person holding the gun is ultimately responsible and in normal situations it would be hard to argue with such an assertion. But in Hollywood, when acting requires going through processes that would break all the rules of safe gun handling in any other situation, it seems less unreasonable to argue that a designated person responsible for managing firearms needs to ensure a certain degree of safety.

Ordinarily the most basic rule of safe firearm handling is to assume a gun is loaded unless you have personally verified it is not. But then in the real world (i.e. when you're not acting from a script) a firearm is either loaded with live bullets or unloaded. On a film set It may be loaded with blanks - it's not much good trying to act out a gunfight scene unless the guns appear to be actually firing.

So I guess I can see different sides of it, but still don't have enough interest in the case to follow more actively. I imagine whatever musings I may have on the topic are of limited relevances to whoever decides who to charge.

He should be charged. He was producer of the movie and had a responsibility to keep the set safe and didn't do it.
In the very least he should have checked the weapon before firing it at her. What is he doing pointing it at her anyway?
The idea that he didn't pull the trigger is nonsense.

Pray that the true evidence will be found out either convicting or defending the accused.
