I remember - when I was a child - the days when train stations had station masters and suburban trains had conductors and security guards as well as a train driver. Hundreds of jobs all gone now. The same was true of buses. They had a driver and a conductor. Now there is just a driver and the aim is to have self-driving buses.

What sorts of values are we promoting as we dismiss whole industries of employees for the sake of efficiency and higher profit margins?

I remember lots of small retail businesses run by families now those are rare.

We're promoting the Cult of Self. We learn that we are the center of the universe and that we want instant gratification. We also learn that the world is an uncertain place and that if we're forced out of one job, our skills may render us obsolete and unable to find another job. Large corporations will continue to swallow up family businesses because they've got the money and the power to put those businesses out of work. We dismiss those people who've been forced out of work as useless drones and depersonalize everybody outside our own immediate sphere. Those are the values we promote. We're becoming as mechanical as those service industries mentioned above.
