A VERY SMALL REMNANT

Isaiah 1:9 Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.

Paul cited this verse in Romans 9:29.

This verse is speaking of the remnant of Israel. The remnant that was of faith.

In Romans 9:24 and Romans 9:30 Paul is speaking of the Gentiles who also by faith are included in the remnant of Israel.

God is the common theme. The people of Israel desired and chose to play the harlot and dishonor God until God could not stand to listen to their prayers of smell the stench of their hypocrisy (praying for God to bless their evil). So like the story of Job, God allowed them to be cursed and punished, but God set limits of ‘this far and no further’. God preserved for Himself a remanent because it pleased the plans of God to do so.

In Romans, Chapter 9 is again about the stubborn blindness of Israel and the Sovereignty of God. Once again God selects for Himself and His plan a remanent from Israel and a remanent from the wild (gentile) branches that God intends to graft into His “chosen people” to continue God’s plan.
