Could you live off $1,200 a month? Why or why not?

It's hard to say. On the face of it I'd say probably not but if it ever became essential you never know what could be trimmed from the household budget.

It would be cold in the winter because the heating would have to stay very low. I don't imagine you'd get a lot of protein in your diet for that kind of money, although shifting from meat to more vegetable based protein would reduce costs. I don't know how you'd find spare cash to fund things like consumable parts of a car on such a limited budget.

If you had to deal with paying rent or a mortgage out of it I don't know if it would be possible. In places like NJ you'd probably need you $1200/month just to pay property taxes.

Nope, not at all. Our mortgage would take half of that.

Yes. Barely, but I'd probably be able to do it for a few months.

I think these days that the only real way to live on $1,200 a month would be to have a lot of roommates that help pay for bills.

That's rent and gas and healthcare. If we ate mushrooms and berries from the wood, sure and dandelions or put a tent in someone's backyard. Bit chilly though.

Maybe try not driving and using public transport?
I meant gas to warm the the house. The prices have gone up insane. I can't even drive. I bike or take the bus and train.

Sorry to hear that. What country are you from?

Holland. First I paid 65 a month. Now 255. Still relatively cheap, cause the neighbour from upstairs has to pay 800 a month to keep 4 rooms warm.

It's actually going to be very difficult for me to live off only $1,200 in a month. But if I'm forced to as I might not have any other choices, then I will have to adjust.
