I was listening to what a Baptist preacher said today (I don't have a link because I heard it on tv) and he said that God puts us in uncomfortable situations so that He can bless us.

Do you agree or disagree with that statement?

I disagree. This seems to follow the thinking of the world, that if something bad happens, God is to blame.

Sometimes God allows us to be put in uncomfortable positions sometimes to test us and not break us.
God is faithful, who will not allow man to be tested beyond that which he can bear but with the rest He provides a way of escape (1 Cor. 10:13)

I'm not sure I agree or disagree in a universal sense. I don't see why God shouldn't put us in a tricky situation so he can show himself through a life lesson in some shape or form. At the same time I wouldn't say that every time we are in a tricky situation it must be because God is trying to teach us something. Sometimes things just happen and we don't have to understand why. I do believe God can use things for good if we allow him to, but I think that's a different perspective on it.

It's FAR, FAR too sweeping of a comment. I don't doubt this MAY - at times - happen, but what the preacher said is absolute, universal and continuous. He has gone MUCH too far, IMO

I have a concern too with the implication that GOD is the source and cause of the "uncomfortable situations." Hum. Yes, we can find ourselves in a bad spot - perhaps because of our own sinfulness and/or stupidity (personal and/or collective) or simply because of the fallenness of the world in which we live, but GOD personally CAUSED, God is the SOURCE and exclusive REASON of it just for me? Hum. Now, God is WITH us (even in the valleys - even if we put ourselves there).... and God desires some good to come of that (eventually.... to someone...) but that doesn't mean He CAUSED it. Especially ALL THE TIME. Universally.

"Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear nothing because you are with me.... you comfort me." Ah. Doesn't say God created that valley and is the cause of why I'm there.... doesn't say it's ALWAYS the case (24/7) for EVERYONE...and the result in Psalm 23 is comfort (not rescue). We can grow through tough times via the grace and power of God - and we should. But that's not what the preacher said.

God blessed us when he chose to redeem us. Whatever God chooses to do with his children is done for our best and for his glory.

It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

I tend to think about Job and how God wasn't the cause of what happened to Job but He did allow Satan to do things to him. God blessed Job later as he stayed faithful and didn't blame God.

Yup He doesnt do ti but He can use it to teach us or deliver us or bless us. When we are in the storm we choose whether to pass through it trusting in God or to go through it with our fear doubt and unbelief

I suppose it is possible, but I would assume it is more likely that if I am in a uncomfortable situation it is my fault more than anything else.

What makes people think that the universe is all about them?

God does things because it brings glory to God.
Sometimes that means your later days are greater than your former days, like Job, and sometimes that means that you get crucified upside down because you are unworthy to die like your savior, like Peter. In either case ... it is all about the POTTER and not about the POT.

On your exceedingly great mercy rests all my hope. Give what you command, and then command whatever you will. You order us to practice continence. A certain writer tells us, I knew that no one can be continent except by God's gift, and that it is already a mark of wisdom to recognize whose gift this is. By continence the scattered elements of the self are collected and brought back into the unity from which we have slid away into dispersion; for anyone who loves something else along with you, but does not love it for your sake, loves you less. O Love, ever burning, never extinguished, O Charity, my God, set me on fire! You command continence: give what you command, and then command whatever you will.
- The Confessions of St. Augustine
