Have you ever participated in church planting? I guess the definition is to establish a new congregation (not a new denomination).

I joined a church plant within a month of it "opening" in my local city. It was a non-denominational (but reformed baptist in doctrine). Our church plant ended up planting another church 5-6 years ago in yet another city in our area. The planting church is part of the Acts:29 network which helps facilitate church planting.

One of our elders told me that we would never be a mega-church. Instead, when we grow to a certain point we will take some of our families and plant another church.

We left that church this past year to join a Southern Baptist (but reformed leaning) church that is closer to our home and is a little more traditional and liturgical. The church we now attend is also part of the Acts:29 network.

How far apart were these churches? Does it hurt or help to have churches close together?

I'm from the midwest where there was a Lutheran church on every corner (that's a joke). Now, I'm more east in the US and it's hard to find a Lutheran church that's close by.

All the churches are in neighboring counties. All are about 30-45 minutes drive from each other.

The church we planted was about 30 minutes south. 10-15 families (around 40 people) who lived closer to the church plant left our church and went to the new church. One of our elders bought a house in the new community and became the lead pastor/elder at the church plant. Our church financially and logistically supported the church plant until they had grown enough to become independent.

Just for fun, I google Lutheran churches in my area. I would have to drive about 20 minutes from my house to get to a Lutheran church and I would have three to choose from within a 30 minute drive.
