Knowing them by their fruits is to help us not follow the wolves who teach falsely.

That only works when we actually examine the fruits we are consuming then quit consuming them if they are born of or giving birth to evil.

"Fruits" also include words as well as actions. When we compare their words with the Bible's teachings, we can determine whether they are true to it or not!

Assessing fruits is also a way we can determine whether someone who claims to follow Jesus is really following or just talking a good game. Words, actions, all add up. The person who claims to follow Jesus but shows no understanding of the Bible, no inclination to apply the Bible to their lives, no interest in attending church etc is a person whose sincerity might be doubted. Obviously there's scope for grace - a brand new Christian can't be expected to understand the finer nuances of obscure books of the Bible but can still reasonably be expected to learn and apply it, and gather with other believers.
