This "friend" sounds pretty bad at being a friend and doesn't know what they're talking about. It can be shown that illness has nothing to do with faith in anything supernatural. Anyone exposed to viruses or bacteria for example, have the same chances of becoming ill from it no matter what they happen to believe. A strong immune system is what protects us from illness. When an epidemic strikes a population, you never find that people of any one particular belief fare any better overall than everyone else.
