With the bakery thing I am wondering should people have the right to refuse to serve others ( in business) based on the owner's stands on the customers' lifestyle choices?

Yes, although that will not happen, to force someone to go against their beliefs or give up their livlihood is just plain wrong

I believe they have the RIGHT to! I have seen people not allow Muslims in there business and I bet there is more. Are you going to criticize them? Or just the Christians?

The fact is it is ILLEGAL to refuse to serve someone based on their religion. If I caught you doing that or found out you did I may or may not rat on you, but you can bet you would lose my business and would not get another red cent out of me.

Personally, I think a business owner (not a franchise owner) should have the right to refuse to serve anyone for whatever reason they like, no matter how seemingly absurd the reason. Now, that business may lose customers over it (or even be targeted for vandalism), but to me that should be up to the business owner to decide to take that risk. :)

No, anyone who serves the public does not have license to discriminate, whether it be based on sexuality, color, creed, sex, or religion. It is a civil rights issue. If it is an area not reserved for the public like a church or charitable organization, then they would be protected by the 1st amendment of freedom of religion. The same would be true for how churches conduct themselves in regards to marriage.

Church clergy still(for now) have the right to not marry someone, as they should. But I am sure that thta will be pushed as well

If it goes against your beliefs no.
What on Earth does my sexuality have to do with most business transactions? I can see refusing to serve someone if for example they wanted you to bake a cake for their gay wedding or wanted you to take pictures at that wedding as they could be seen as condoning the action. However, yesterday when my mother, sister, grandparents and I went out to eat and grandfather dropped about $85 dollars on lunch ( with the tip) what did us eating at Fatz have to do with who we liked to sleep with?

Last time I looked noone asks that but the wedding baker who refused paid a hefty price for that refusal even though they were standing on what they believed, but no real persecution going on

You said that someone should be able to refuse ANY service for ANY reason. If it can in no way be condoning one's behavior then what business is their lifestyle to you?

To me it is simple, as long as I am just doing a job and I dont know then it is fine but when it crosses the line such as baking a cake for a gay wedding then I understand wanting to refuse and saying that it is either their principles or their business is not a very good answer in my opinion. It is fine as long as it is just Christians but turn the tables in some way, and no I dont know how that would be done and then listen to the outcry. Personally I am tired of seeing these agendas pushed and everyone jumping on the bandwagon cheering them on and in the meanwhile someones business is left in ashes or else their beliefs have to be compromised

With the bakery thing I am wondering should people have the right to refuse to serve others ( in business) based on the owner's stands on the customers' lifestyle choices?

I remember the concept of the words "Management reserves the right to refuse service to anyone".

My view is that a business should be allowed to serve, or not serve, anyone it chooses. The only requirement I would impose is that if the business is based in a public premises (e.g. a retail store) they should make it very clear before entering who, if anyone, they will refuse to serve. So whether their rule is "Drunk people will not be served" or "no blacks, no gays, no Jews", it must be clear to anyone that they won't be served before they enter.

It would also need to be based on the management's decisions rather than the preferences of individual employees. It's clearly not workable to find that you go into a retail store only to find that the cashier on till 8 won't serve black people, the one at 9 doesn't like people who smell bad and the one at 6 won't serve men.

I do believe that anyone in a public position (police, councils, court houses etc) should be required to serve anyone regardless.

All that said I do struggle to understand why people have issues with serving people based on their lifestyle. The high profile cases always seem to relate to people providing wedding services not wanting to serve gay couples, but it's not as if making a cake or taking photographs represents a moral endorsement of a lifestyle and I have to wonder whether the people turning away the gay couple would ask prying questions of a heterosexual couple to make sure they weren't adulterers, fornicators etc.

What does my lifestyle have to do with transactions? Quite frankly, if you ( being general here) have an issue with me serving people because it makes it look like I approve of the behavior then you being general here, again are the one with the issue because frankly NOT serving them makes it look as though it is OK to treat them differently and they will end up NOT seeing love and just seeing judgement. Again, if it is something like a wedding OK; otherwise though no.

Problem is that there is no difference nor is there any concern for the owners beliefs or rights, it is all about being PC
