It depends what you mean by a better workout and seeing results.

Hills are probably better for working your CV system but will naturally result in having to work harder to cover less ground more slowly.

I think with my hashimotos that harder workouts actually don't help and my body gets more inflamed.

If a hilly workout does mean overdoing it then you would see better results from a more gentle workout.

Speed repeats today. My suggested workout was 8-minute threshold intervals but I didn't feel like doing that. Truth be told I didn't feel like running at all after working with soundproofing material but decided to go out anyway. The first few minutes are a gentle-ish warmup, then I started running harder up the hills. It's good to get the system working hard.

There is hunting going on at a trail that my husband and I like to hike on, so we've been avoiding that until January comes again. So we're back at our favorite county park, but I've only felt like walking the paved trail there recently. I'm finding that it's harder to walk on blacktop than the rocky trails I normally hike on.

I finally got some new hiking shoes and I really like how lightweight they are compared to the old ones. On pavement I can walk a little faster without having all that extra weight at my feet, so I'm enjoying some of the trails I didn't like before.

Not much running lately, but did a gentle 10k yesterday and another one today. Lost some time earlier in the month with a bug and then lost some more time because we went away for a few days. I'm hoping I can hit my running targets and still earn the badges on my tracker software before the month is out, but it will depend on whether the rain and snow actually appears.

One of my monthly challenges is to complete a 15k run. I'm hoping I can get that done this week, the deadline is the end of the month so I'm running out of time. It doesn't have to be a fast run, just cover the distance.

In theory if I tell my watch I'm running I can walk it and it will still count, but I'd rather at least attempt to run it.

I got my 15k run in, without breaking any speed records at all. It makes a bit over 35km I've run in the last three days. Perhaps it's not surprising my legs feel like dead weights right now.

I still don't feel like I'm firing on all cylinders, not sure if I've still got the very tail end of whatever bug got me earlier in the month or if it's just the cold weather. I got a run in today, although it was another run-walk-run-walk thing. It's not often it takes me until this late in the month to tick off all my running challenges from my fitness tracker. Ordinarily my run would have been around 45-50 minutes but because I needed an hour of running before the end of tomorrow, and tomorrow is supposed to be colder than today, I just extended my run a little to take in an extra loop and finished it off.

I can't wait for the 40 and 50 degree F days again. Today was a little too chilly to go outside and do any walking.

I went for speed repeats yesterday. I started out wishing I had an extra layer and finished up wishing I had chosen a cooler layer. I have a few cycling jerseys that keep me warm, and keep the wind off my front. Obviously running is slower so a tail wind can be sapping but if the wind is that bad I put a waterproof on and walk instead.

That said I agree with you, I'd rather train in 50 degrees than 15.

The weather has been too bad outside to get to the park to do any walking. I feel like a slug even though I'm still making attempts to get my 7,500 steps in a day.

Wow, this thread went quiet for a while. It's not much fun exercising outdoors for me either, I've only been for one run this month because of the cold and the wind (the wind is more of a problem). Today looks like it's going to be another case of bundling up and going for a walk. I'm tired of walking, I want to open the taps up and run a bit. Hopefully tomorrow I can do that. My watch keeps suggesting harder runs but with 35mph winds and wind chill factors in single digits that's not happening.

They aren't the worst I've walked in. Sometimes I've had to lean hard into the wind, and times it's been hard enough to make me stumble sideways a step or two when a gust catches me.

I wish there was a gym nearer me, the trouble is that when the weather is nasty and I don't really want to be outside I also don't really want to have to drive to a gym.

Plus right now there are so many sicknesses to catch. I'll just keep getting my steps in front of the tv :)

Also true in the winter, although the people who attend the gym regularly are more likely to be the more healthy ones.

Yesterday I finally got a run in, for the first time in a week. Today I walked because we had snow and wind. For much of the walk there was no wind and I thought I could have run, but then I got into the more exposed areas and was glad to be dressed for walking. Hopefully I can run again tomorrow and Monday. In the cold I run gently - however much I want to improve my fitness when it's so cold and blood runs thicker it seems that getting home alive is a higher priority than pushing harder.

I shoveled snow. Good enough, right?

It can be pretty intense, depending on how deep it is and what area you're clearing.

Sometimes my wife and I have chalked up several thousand steps just clearing snow from our driveway. When it's deep and heavy, and we need to walk back and forth working with partial shovel widths at a time, it's surprising how fast they add up.

My suggested workout today was sprint repeats. The suggested intervals my watch throws at me are much too easy - it gives me long enough to recover between short intervals that they aren't much of a challenge. I didn't want to do sprints today so decided to take a gentle run, with walk breaks as needed. After the first mile my system was warmed up and it just felt like my legs wanted to go for it, so I ran fast intervals rather than sprint intervals. Because they aren't all-out explosively fast I can run for longer at that pace, but still need to take breaks especially when I'm pacing hard up hills.

It was a good run, I enjoyed it.
