Food and drink, sabbaths and holy days are but shadows of things to come. Jesus fulfilled those things.

The ultimate death is seperation from God for eternity. (Second death).
Our physical death is separation from some people till the resurrection. (First death).

We enter the valley of the shadow of death at our birth. We see / understand physical death and decide that we do not wish to be separated from God for eternity. (And other believers)

One thing used to understand is the Eye of the needle.

the eye of a needle has nothing there, it is a vacant hole. That hole is where the thread goes that ties things together. Hidden messages are tied to the reality of the suffering of Jesus. I suppose suffering can be a thread (story, thought , symbol, shadow, etc.).
