I am sitting here with close to a foot of snow and just got done shoveling which really isnt a good thing at my age but it had to be done. Here at least the roads are very bad and we have had snow sleet freezing rain so it is very bad out there.

Checked the temperature in my work area. I keep a close eye on it because at present there's no heating over there at all.

Yesterday when the temperature outside was around 40 the temperature in the work area was 52. Now it's just below 30 outside and the temperature in the work area is 54. So it looks like I"ve made quite a difference already. Last winter I cut the heating bill about 30%. I'm hoping for another 30% cut by the time I'm done over there, maybe slightly more. It will be interesting to see what the heating costs look like when there are functioning radiators over there.... hope there are no nasty surprises!

Shoveling a foot of snow really isn't fun at any age. Do you have a neighbor with a plow who can shift the worst of it for you?

We didn't get any snow today, but it was very cold rain. Where I drove today the roads were not slick, so that is great.

I heard reports of freezing rain today but didn't have to be outside. I've barely moved from my recliner all day.

We were only supposed to get an inch of snow and it turned out to be 3 inches and the poor weather went into the night. That means my daughter and I couldn't get out to any museums. I wish the towns here would plow throughout the storms instead of waiting until the end. It's ridiculous.

I got to watch a number of cars whose drivers clearly didn't know how to handle snow yesterday. A situation would develop where one car would get stuck on the hill, spin its wheels furiously for a time before giving up. Then the car behind would decide not to wait any more and try to pass, only to lose traction itself and get stuck on the wrong side of the road facing partly sideways. From there it was just a question of which one would move first, because if either suddenly lurched in the snow it would hit the other.

Quite a few cars gave up their attempt to climb the hill and instead attempted to turn around and descend the hill. One person didn't even attempt to turn around, they just backed down the hill. At least they managed to do most of it without going sideways.

With the combination of people doing that and the odd idiot who thought he could still do 50mph despite the conditions, presumably because he had four wheel drive, I'm still amazed nobody met in the middle at speed.

Taking a sick day. I hate sick days (being sick and missing work). I already get four on/ four off. That's enough sitting at home for me. Ah well... :p

I can relate. There are basically two ways to get up to where I live - a steep hill with curves or a pretty straight steep hill. Both are about 500 metres from the base to the top. It's not bad until a truck starts going up, then everyone behind is relegated to about 20 km/hr. And there's no getting up the hill at that speed short of luck when on ice or snow. Most are able to handle it, but I've only been up here for one winter so far. The worst for us is on a stretch of highway known as "the Coke" (Coquihalla). It's a steep, progressive drive into the mountains and there are major accidents every year with sudden snow and ice patches. It comes on quick and heavy. It even has it's own "reality" show on Discovery Channel Canada - "Highway Through Hell"

The hill makes it interesting, and of course people who don't know how to drive in snow simply make a bad situation worse. Part of me felt like it wasn't really on to stand in the window and watch people struggle in the snow but it's not as if I can do anything to help them. Often it seems a bad situation is made much worse by people who are well-meaning but misguided - the ones who stop their own car and try to help when they can't really do anything. If your stationary car gets hit by another car, whether because it failed to stop or slid out from somewhere else, the last place you want to be is under the wheels trying to dig them out.

The only alternative to the road past my house is to use smaller roads that are likely to have worse problems with snow and ice, before you even think about the length of the detour and the fun of negotiating bends in the ice.
