Does anyone follow Bernie Sanders and his run for the presidency?

I like this guy a lot. He has so many brilliant ideas and a heart of gold. He really cares about the underdogs.

Sanders is well intentioned, but is a socialist. He really is not electable. But his soaring poll numbers are a very instructive reflection of just how bad a candidate Hillary is.

I disagree with you. Maybe we need some Socialism at this time of poverty among many children in the US. Sanders has it all. I will vote for him. I don't like the way Hillary talks to people.

We need a guy like him simply because of the income inequality, and all the other things that are so wrong right now

I am pretty much down to Bernie and Kasich at this point. I think Kasich is just a good human being, and I really like Bernie when it comes to civil rights. The income gap between the rich and the working poor continues to widen. I am tired of it. I consider myself more left of center libertarian, and I certainly don't agree with him on education. But there is little to no chance that a free college education bill would be approved by Congress. Wall Street continues to benefit from crony capitalism and kickbacks. That's why Hillary is so scary to me. She has known some lobbyists very well for 23 years! 23 years, think about that!

I am not into socialism as a political construct, but like Ruth, I do think social programs have some merit. The problem with socialism is, as noble as it seems, mankind is inherently greedy. There will always be the haves and the have nots. I don't mean to soap box here, but I must say that everywhere socialism has been tried, the poor end up poorer and in bondage. Bernie Sanders is, I think, a noble man. But, I don't think he will get anywhere with his ideas.

Probably not but it is time to reign in big business and stop allowing the wealthy 1 per cent continue widening the income gap. I would vote for him just on that alone

I agree with your reasoning completely. And they want people to work for nothing too. That was my whole problem with Mitt Romney and a lot of the Republican Party. Personally, I do not see things getting better before Jesus comes.

Ruth, socialism has failed everywhere it has been tried. What we need are JOBS for people to care for their families. Obama has destroyed our economy and our workforce is now smaller, under his policies, than before WWII.

We don't need another communist in the White House, Ruth. We need a good strong conservative capitalist who will get this nation moving forward again.

Good points, Brighten.

The real problem with socialism, as Margaret Thatcher once said, is that "Socialism works just fine -- until you run out of other people's money." Think of the literal billions of dollars we have spent since the 1960s through LBJ's "Great Society." And yet. a half-century later, the percentage of poor people is virtually the same. It has done nothing at all except destroy the black family structure and remove incentives to work for themselves.

I would think that Ted Cruz or Donald Trump would be strong conservatives who would turn things around, much like Ronald Reagan did after the debacle of the Carter years. Of course, to do that, they would need a continuing Republican Congress -- that is led by strong conservatives instead of dorks like John Boner and Mitch McConnell.

Sorry, but I don't know that socialism has failed. It is doing well in many countries.

It didn't work very well in the USSR, was a disaster in Nazi Germany and has failed everywhere else. Name me a few of these "many" countries you claim are shining brightly from socialism.

Well one thing is sure, capitalism in its present form is not working for most but only for a privileged few

Exactly!!! I believe the U.S. was built on a free market system but capitalism seems to morph into do whatever it takes to get on top including bribery.

Overly simplistic illustration.
In a communist country, if you discover gold in your backyard, the government will compel you to dig it up and give it to the government.
In a socialist country, if you discover gold in your backyard, the government will pay you to dig it up and give it to the government.
In a capitalist society, if you discover gold in your backyard, you dig it up and sell it, and the government taxes your profit.
In American society, if you discover gold in your backyard, the government either sells the mineral rights to someone already richer than you, or declares it a National Treasure and no longer allows you to access your back yard.
