I hear people say that "God told them to do something", but what biblical support can be given that God audibly talks to people today?

No anecdotal stories please. Just share from the Bible. Either make your case for God speaking today or make your case for God not speaking today. The requirement, however, is that the Bible must be your proof for your view.

I knew a man how that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter!

When people say "God told me to do such and such" they usually mean "I want to do such and such an I have a feeling that it is okay with God for me to do it, in fact I reckon God is leading me to do it". If they are very enthusiastic about whatever they said God told them to do then be careful not to follow them, enthusiastic advocates for this or that change their minds very quickly and if they drag you along with them then you'll be in for a roller-coaster ride of ups and downs in your faith/spiritual life (probably a lot more downs than ups). In the holy scriptures God spoke audibly only a few times - to Israel at Sinai, to Moses on the mountain and at the burning bush, to Elijah in the cave, and to the crowd & Jesus once and maybe at Jesus' baptism, I can't recall any more off the top of my head as I type.

I wonder why this forum seems to have issue with people 'hearing' from God? This is the second thread approaching this issue in a similar fashion where the OP possits the question in a way that focuses upon the audible voice of God.

To me this is a case of someone asking for clear evidence that God exists. Surely we all believe God can speak to His people and if so then why would He not speak to them?

As for the audibility part, again I believe it is entirely possible for God to speak to one and prevent another from hearing His voice.

We are told that we should test the spirits of all words received so why don't we just do our part and test whether we are hearing the same message and leave others to do their own duediligence?

My son once complained to me that he didn't hear God. So I said: lemme pray your ears open.
LOL the next day I go to a revival service and go for prayer, woman asks: Can I pray for you that God opens your ears?
I think a lot of times we don't hear God cause we talk talk talk talk talk talk talk in prayer Lord bless this person Lord save that person Lord heal that person. Amen. And bam walk away. Prayer time is over.
My, that'd be really impolite if you had a conversation w someone.

We are guaranteed that God speaks to us by His Word

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. 2 Timotny 3:16-17

Beyond that there is no guarantee that it is from God. Since our "feelings" are sinful from the fall of Adam we cannot rely on that. So when people say they feel what they heard is from God, they want to believe that it is, of course. But they have no proof beyond a feeling. Too many times we hear about someone who says they heard God say something and it turned out to be wrong. His Word from scripture is not wrong though, thankfully.

I agree with farmir pete. Jesus had something to say to those who wanted proof, I believe He said the only sign that will be given is the sign of Jonah

Depends. He also said if you ppl dont see signs and wonders you will by no means believe and He healed his son.
And asking for proof texts is not asking for a miracle.

Indeed, God spoke through the writers of scripture. Does God audibly speak to you today?

How do we test the spirits? Is it an oral or written test?

I do not know how you test the spirit, but I tend to ponder the words until they are confirmed either by someone I trust or by scripture.

How do you test your interpretations of scripture?

What biblical text do you use for audibly hearing God talk to you in prayer?

audibly? God saying: This is My Son about Jesus or: Saul Saul.
In your heart: the texts about prophecying from Paul.
Once God spoke to me. He used the preacher. He said: You should not only learn texts but also the references.
Was too lazy to listen, sorry.
