evidence of a true walk with God

John makes several statements in 1 John about who is truly walking with God.

1 John 1:8 "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us." Then in verse 10 it says that this person makes God out to be a liar and the word has no place in us.

1 John 1:6-7 if we claim to have fellowship with Him yet walk in darkness then we lie.

1 John 1:7 if we walk in the light then we have fellowship with one another and his blood purifies us from all sin.

1 John 2:9-10a if "anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. Whoever loves his brother lives in the light. . . "
one of the evidences that we are truly his is that we love each other. Because he is love we demonstrate we are his by walking in his love.

This is also evident by what we don't love 1 John 2:15-17
"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him." John goes on to explain that the things in the world are the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does. These things are passing away.

Even though we may be saved there is something to be said for examining ourselves and asking myself does my life demonstrate that I truly love God and others and don't love the world. Or have I compromised in some way and tried to both love God and love the world. Because from this reading it seems clear that I cannot do both, but it seems many try.

Encountering Christian Holy Ones is the way early converts came to repentance unto Baptism into Christ and began to run the race set before us...

I mean, imagine encountering Paul or Peter or especially John...

As a Lutheran, any evidence that I'm with God all points to God and the things HE does, whether that's for me or through me. In Justification it's God doing the work completely and in my sanctification I cooperate but it's more like me trying to walk down the up escalator and the Holy Spirit doing the rest.

The verses you quoted are all Law with the exception of the one about His blood purifying us from sin.

Yes, I understand that. As it was pointed out in another thread that the fruit of the Spirit are really the work of the Spirit and not something we produce by our own effort. I think our main role is to do our part to cooperate with what the Spirit is doing and not to resist him and grieve him. We are to work on our relationship with the Lord and staying close to him. Like sheep that have a tendency to wander off. When you wander off your more likely to get into trouble

Because we have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit we want to please God, bear fruit and grow in faith. Those are the things the Holy Spirit guides us into doing. As sinful man, our sin gets in the way and wants to do other things which is why God keeps working with us over and over again. Lo, I am with you always. Thankfully we aren't on our own and it's because of God working in us that we are who we are.
