I think it is so important for people who suffer with mental health issues stay physically active. Physical exercise should be recommended by more family doctors as a line of treatment for people. I've heard it said that exercise can actually be as effective as an anti depressant medication for many people.

I'm not medically qualified but I do know that physical exercise releases a lot of endorphins and improve your mood. I can tell a difference in the winter months when I don't get out and walk so much because it's so cold - I get grumpy more easily.

From your article headline, a GP is an English doctor - it's short for General Practitioner. They are like the family doctor - kind of like the primary care physician in the US.
