He is considered by many to be the first scholar of the early church. He was one of only two in the early church, the other being Jerome, who knew Hebrew. His Hexapla was an extremely important work and was consulted by Jerome. "Contra Celsum" is relevant even in our time. Many of the arguments Origen refutes in that work are still being used today by Jesus mythers. He really is a fascinating person in so many ways.

It has been many years since I studied him, but I was under the impression he also had some views that we would consider heretical today.

"He believed, for instance, in the pre-existence of souls and that eventually everyone, including the Devil, would be saved. In addition, he described the Trinity as a hierarchy, not as an equality of Father, Son, and Spirit."

He created controversy when he tried to explain the gospel in terms his culture could grasp.

True, but he has also been blamed for may things he did not believe or have anything to do with. He has been and is a scapegoat for many. He is like Constantine in that regard.
