The long infant baptism thread made me do some thinking.

Are there any major differences in the theology of what happens and why to baptized infants among the Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Presbyterian and maybe Methodist traditions? Which are all the traditions I can think of that I know practice infant baptism?

Do all think it washes away original sin?
Do all hold to baptismal regeneration?
Do all think it is the sign of the New Covenant that replaces circumcision?

As someone who has spent my entire life around credo-baptist (even the Methodist in my area practiced believers baptism) I am curious about those questions.

...a couple of thoughts:

There are other churches that baptize infants--the Eastern Orthodox and related churches, the Reformed, United Methodists, and the Congregationalists/UCC, for example.

And my offhand answer to all three of your "Do all ____" questions would be "yes," although that last one is not emphasized very much in most of the churches named above.

Here is the Lutheran perspective on all aspects of Baptism.

It is essentially the same as in the Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican traditions.

This thread contains about 10 posts (short to moderate in length) explaining the position, complete with Scriptures and ECF.
